What is the ecological footprint?

It is a calculation of natural resource use that assess environmental impacts. It measures the demand on and supply of nature and addresses the consumption of individuals, cities, or entire nations.

The Ecological Footprint tracks the use of productive surface areas. Typically these areas are: cropland, grazing land, fishing grounds, built-up land, forest area, and carbon demand on land.

It measures how much nature we have and how much nature we use.

What about food?

Food consumption across the globe causes about 26% of humanity’s Ecological Footprint. Within the Mediterranean region, for instance, rethinking our diets could lead to a reduction in the region’s Ecological Footprint of up to 10%.
