SUMMARY:Fresh Fish Alert and Foodnected presentation\, University of Catania
DESCRIPTION:Connecting People and Nature around Fair and Sustainable Local Food Systems \nThe University of Catania and the Slow Food Catania Convivium will announce the joining of their forces in two innovative projects in the island of Sicily next Thursday May 12. \nThe Fresh Fish Alert\, was initiated by the University of Catania to provide an electronic solution to the marketing of artisanal fishery products in Sicily. Foodnected is a Mediterranean wide project initiated by Slow Food\, the Low Impact Fishers of Europe (LIFE)\, the Global Footprint Network (GFN)\, and Gob Menorca. \nThe projects will be presented on Thursday 12 May at 12:00\, in room J of the Department of Agriculture\, Food and Environment (Di3A) of the University of Catania\, in via Santa Sofia 100. \nTogether\, the two projects aim to address the shortcomings of the market and to support fair and sustainable local food systems. In Sicily\, this will be achieved through a collaboration between researchers and academics\, representatives of the Sicilian Region and local institutions\, fishers and their organizations. Under the guidance of Slow Food Catania\, they will develop strategies and create opportunities for the benefit of producers and consumers\, through establishing communities of practices based on shared values. \nThe Fresh Fish Alert Project – headed by Prof. Iuri Peri\, with the collaboration of Prof. Giuseppina Carrà and Dr. Clara Monaco – will involve Sicilian fishers and\, starting with those operating in the Gulf of Catania\, will create a multi vendor marketplace capable of matching the supply with the demand for local seafood products produced by artisanal coastal fishing activities. \nDr. Anastasia De Luca\, Convivium Leader of the Slow Food Catania Convivium\, and Dr. Manuela Trovato\, facilitator and contact person for the Low Impact Fishers of Europe (LIFE) in Sicily\, will collaborate in the Foodnected project to facilitate the emergence of local food systems that take care of nature and people\, for the benefit of consumers and small producers. \nThe objective of this synergistic action is to identify opportunities for enhancing the quality local products\, shorten the distance between producers and consumers and develop an ethical code of shared environmental and social values for the way food is produced and consumed. \nMore details on:\nwww.foodnected.org \nwww.pescadiverso.com\nwww.slowfood.it\nwww.lifeplatform.eu \nFor information: Prof. Giuseppina Carrà +39 3486035365\, creator of the Fresh Fish Alert project
